Mr. Boerckel has been on the scene since 1983. Right out of high school he started the Air Wear shop with high school friend John Cappadona..The Air Wear shop was infamous in the mid to late 80's for air-brushing t-shirts in Shoppers Village. They opened up two more shops in other indoor flea markets. "we rode that fad for 7 years." It was very successful. Not knowing what to do after closing Mr. Boerckel said: " I Guess i'll just keep on painting". He began painting canvas' and gave his first painting (why is the sky blue ) to his friend Maura. Later he began painting murals in night clubs to pay the bills. Constantly sketching, not realizing this was his life, continued recording his life through paint. What he thought was was just a bunch of paintings, was a view into his world. This epiphany occured when all his work was shown in a solo show. In the early 90's he ran an art gallery out of his studio in Franklin Square. For two years he tried exposing new talent to the area. During those years, there were some amazing talent showing their work. Among them were: Bill Taffuri, Sheila Sporer, Con Artist), and many more. Sea Cliff gallery owner Nancy Driscoll was a curator for an art show "for the people by the people". It was a hand made over-sized book full of art work that was to be presented to the Clinton administration. It was a success, and Tipper Gore accepted the book into the Library of Congress. The gallery didn't bring much income so, one late night at Kinkos while making fliers for a show. Darren met up with Artie, a music promoter for local hardcore shows. They began having shows to supplement their income . That was good for another two years. During this time Mr.Boerckel was painting backdrops for novelty scenic studios and worked one summer out at the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport Long Island. Everything changed when an old client , John Cesstare, came into his studio one day and asked "you busy, Ii might have a job for you out east" . That was the beginning of a new chapter. The project was an interior build-out of a Bar/Night Club called the Foggy Goggle in Hampton Bay New York. They were so impressed with his work, John Cestarre and Paul Curry took him on the road to build other night clubs throughout the east coast. But that's another story. Mr.Boerckel has been working on interiors for 8 years now. over 30 to date. This year he is working on a new set of canvas' and animation to show. "I'm just keeping busy till i die" He says as he twirls the hair under his lip. | |||||
